Uncovering Hidden Concrete
Concrete floors can pass the test of time, but time can still take its toll. The top surface can be damaged, coated or painted. Cracks, chips, and holes are often revealed. After old carpet or aged tile is removed, adhesives and carpet glue often remain behind. Moisture which was trapped between layers can also cause problems and needs to be dealt with. Foot traffic can be very abrasive and wear out old technology coatings that need to be removed. Each project presents its own unique set of challenges. We use our experience and knowledge to diagnosis the problem and present you with the options. Our emphasis is on long term performance. Quality is always the most economical when it comes to concrete.
Tile, Mastic, and Glue Removal
If some or all of the vinyl or ceramic tile still cover the floor, we begin the process by removing it using customized machinery. We assess the amount and type of adhesive which was used and then remove it by grinding and/or shot blasting the surface. Our goal is to remove the glue and mastic without damaging the concrete, and if the concrete is in good condition it can be ground, tinted and polished. If the surface has moderate to severe damage we can treat it with self-leveling concrete, concrete overlays, or epoxy/polyurea coatings.
Shot Blasting and Grinding
The top layers of concrete can be discolored, stained, soiled, and damaged by moisture, glue, paint, and other substances. Various conditions require different equipment to resolve the damage. Shot blasting and grinding may be required of the same floor to achieve the best results. Great floors start with proper surface preparation, whether a small garage floor or large commercial space. We have a substantial inventory of what we believe is the best equipment and tools available. We learned long ago that there is no compromise when it comes to concrete tooling. Long Term Repair for Cracks and Chips
A simple crack can lead to complicated problems. Some cracks may be a natural part of the concrete design while others may appear to be hairline fissions that run down to the foundation. We assess the severity of the damage and fill them completely. Fixing cracks for long term performance involves using the right fillers that will cure below grade and fill the entire crack. The photo above shows a 4 inch slab filled to the bottom. Too often cracks are filled only to cover the crack and will not cure below grade. We do it right the first time. We take great care fixing cracks or damaged concrete as with our decorative systems. We know all to well that long term performance of what you can see depends on what you can’t.
Epoxy Removal
If an epoxy coating was improperly applied it may separate and peel over time. If the concrete wasn’t prepared or sandblasted tiny air holes can form under the epoxy. If this occurs, the epoxy should be mechanically removed before a new surface treatment can be applied.
