Epoxy Installers in Boston – Madstone Floors
Epoxies are a big part of our flooring installation business. We use blends that prevent moisture, others are for high traffic industrial areas, commercial kitchens, retail stores and various uses in residential homes like garages and basements.
In recent years as decorative concrete has increased in demand, installers and manufacturers have worked together to create new uses and blends. Many of our concrete overlays are now sealed with water based epoxies with polyaspartic finish coatings. The results are excellent but did not happen by accident. It’s a combination of application techniques and performance from experience in the field and product engineering to get the outstanding results.
An evolution in product development has led to one of our most popular applications, that being metallic epoxies. These are a combination of the aesthetic appearance of decorative concrete with the performance of epoxies.
They come in numerous colors with custom color combinations. The aesthetic appearance can be very subtle like with polished concrete or extremely wild. Most of our clients in Providence to Boston prefer the subtle appearance.
With so many options available, the best solution is for us to take a look at your floor and provide you with function and decorative options based on the budget for the floor.

Our Services
We are decorative concrete floor contractors and designers in Boston MA and Providence Rhode Island and surrounding local areas. We specialize in taking existing surfaces that are in rough shape and transforming them into beautiful, functional surfaces. It’s rare that we find a floor without blemishes, cracks, moisture issues or are uneven.
Today, there are great products available that help us solve problems with an end result of highly functional and decorative surfaces that will endure harsh, high traffic environments.
What We Do
- Concrete Polishing – In our industry, true concrete polishing is the process of girnding an existing surface with a machine that looks a little like a lawnmower on steroids. Our small machines are 400 lbs and large ones over 1,000 lbs. We go back and forth effectively like cutting the lawn. However, rather then a rotating blade, we use diamond pads that rotate with 3 disks and typically three sets of diamonds per disk. Attached is a high powered vacuum eliminating airborne dust. Not all floors are appropriate for polishing. Sometimes they need an overlay.
- Concrete Overlays – We use a few different overlays depending on factors such as height, durability requirements and aesthetic appearance. As concrete floor contractors we need to be well versed with many options since our clients all need something different. No two floors are ever the same. We will use thin coatings that can be applied 1/16th inch thick up to 1/2 inch thick self leveling concrete.
- Epoxy Coatings – Epoxy technology has been around for many years. Coatings and application methods has improved. There are many available from thin, low performance paints to thick high performance coatings used in tough industrial conditions. Metallic epoxies have emerged in recent years combining the durability of epoxy with the decor of decorative concrete polishing and overlays.

Madstone Floors in based in Barrington RI providing concrete polishing in Boston to Providence Rhode Island and surrounding areas.
There is a lot of confusion about this sensational floor and what exactly is polished concrete. I guess we could say that any floor with a shine is polished. Just because a wax can be applied, doesn’t make it qualify as polished. We apply skim coats and self leveling cement coatings but even though we can buff them to a high shine, that is no concrete polishing by our industry.
A true polished surface is achieved by grinding down the existing flooring wuth heavy equipment with diamond blades. This creates a lot of dust which is vacuumed as we go with ultra high powered vacuums. It is what we call a dustless process.
We go back and forth with our equipment just like cutting the lawn. As we finish with 1 setof diamond blades, we stop and replace with finer blades. We do this as many as 8 times depending on how much gloss the client wants. We can provide anywhere from a matte to high gloss finish.
About half way through the process we add a liquid densifyer. This is a specialized liquid with chemical properties which tighten the pores of the concrete providing additional surface area to polish. The tighter the pores and finer the surface, the more light reflection.
As you can see in the photo above, the stone aggregate is visible from grinding the surface. Aggregate is always mixed in when poured but we never know exactly what we will find. The aggregate used varies from floor to floor. Unless we are involved in a new floor we have no control over what we find. Most projects are old floors that we restore to new.
We encounter all kinds of issues. Sometimes the cement is what we consider hard, sometimes soft. It takes years of experience to develop the knowledge to tackle the unknown.
We have provided concrete polishing in Boston retail stores, restaurants, offices, homes, condos and lofts.
Give us a call to help you with your next project. We’ll help you create something unique that will last a lifetime.

Epoxy Floor Coatings with Cove Base
In the photos featured here you can see that we installed a cove base and applied quartz epoxy floor coatings to the top edge. Sure it looks good, but the benefit is that the floor is easy to keep clean.
Whether we apply decorative chips or colored quartz, the floor will look great with long term performance if maintained. Maintenance is simple. The best solution is to use warm water and ammonia , a stiff bristle broom and a squeegee. Routine cleaning will help keep the floor looking great for years.
The benefit to the cove molding is that you can apply as much water to the floor as you need without worrying about the water getting under the walls and causing problems.
Application of the epoxy floor coatings over the cove molding creates seamless flooring. Since we have created what is like a pan, the water will always flow back towards the center. Then you can just simply use your squeegee to pull the water into a drain or with a garage, out to the driveway.
Simple, effective, recommended!

Basement Floor Refinishing Using Decorative Acid Stains
Decorative concrete using acid stains directly on existing concrete basement floors is one of the most cost effective and problem free applications in the northeast. Virtually every home has a basement that is below grade with moisture issues. Hardwood, carpet and tile just do not work in most cases.
This project was in Marion MA totaling 1,500 square feet. The existing concrete was in fairly good condition with very few cracks and blemishes.
We applied layers of liquid acid stain that naturally reacts with the calcium and lime in the concrete. The process creates a natural earth tone color with marbleized appearance. We sealed the surface with a water based sealer and wax coat. The combination protects the surface, enhances the appearance and allows moisture vapor to pass through without damaging the application.
Many of our clients will use area rugs on an acid stained basement floor. If the rug gets water damaged, it call be rolled up and removed. However moisture will not affect the decorative concrete. We used acid stains and sealers manufactured by Kemiko .
Basement Floor Refinishing with Concrete Overlays
If your concrete floor is damaged or is uneven, we use self leveling concrete that is applied 1/4 – 1/2 inch thick or a thinner overlay that can be applied at a thickness of 1/16th inch. Both are ideal for basements and can be stained and dyed then topically sealed. We can also use saw cuts to create the appearance of custom tile.

Looking for concrete floor contractors in Boston MA who can provide a polished surface for your home office or retail store in the Boston area? We specialize in creating highly functional, affordable, designer floors from Boston to Providence like the one featured here.
This one above was 2,000 square feet of office space at a private company based in Cambridge. This was a true polished concrete floor with medium shine. The floor is non slip, very easy to maintain and will last almost forever ( a really long time).
The process is to mechanically grind the floor with subsequent finer blades until we reach the desired level of shine. We can achieve anywhere from a low shine matte finish to a high gloss. We can also stain the floor with topical stains and dyes like in some of the images shown below. In the photos above the client chose a natural gray.
One of the key steps in the process is to densify the concrete, a process of hardening the surface. We used Scoffield Formula One Lithium Densifier which serves to increase the hardness of the floor which aids the polishing process.

Refinish a Basement Floor With Decorative Concrete Overlays
We recently completed this concrete floor for a remodeled basement being converted into an exercise room in Charlestown RI. The floor had old concrete floor paint that was doing the typical chip and delamination and needed resurfacing.
We removed the concrete paint and applied a new concrete overlay with a clean, refined modern appearance. The 1,000 square foot floor took about 3 days to complete.
If you have a basement floor our typical project is approximately 1,000-2,500 square feet. Our concrete overlays are perfect for basement floors. They have incredible adhesion to existing concrete and are breathable allowing moisture vapor to pass through without affecting the coatings. We apply water based sealers completing a breathable surface that will endure with attractive designs for years.
We also apply epoxy coatings in residential garages and commercial properties like restaurants and industrial facilities.
Contact us to discuss your concrete flooring. We have numerous solutions including topical moisture vapor barriers and overlays that solve a multitude of problems. We are based in the Charlestown Rhode Island area.
